Inmate escapes while still in handcuffs outside Harris County jail

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The search is on in downtown Houston for an inmate who managed to escape overnight.

A Harris County Precinct 4 deputy was taking the suspect to the processing center at the county jail when the suspect ran away, still handcuffed.

The suspect was being booked at the jail on San Jacinto and Baker when he took off.

Houston police were called to help Precinct 1 deputies search for the suspect.

"We used a canine," said HPD Lt. Larry Crowson.

"We had officers from Precinct 1 and also the sheriff's department. We checked the bayous and streams in the area. We were unable to locate the suspect at this time."

Right now, Precinct 4 isn't releasing many details about the suspect.

They said the man was being booked on a non-violent misdemeanor and took off.

The suspect's name was not released, and they would not say specifically what charge he was being booked on.

We are not sure if the inmate has a criminal history of not.
