The shooting was right across Cypress Lakes High School.
According to the sheriff's office, Mason was with a group of unknown men, waiting to pick up his girlfriend, who is a student at the school, when an argument ensued. During the argument, one of the unidentified men shot Mason.
Authorities said multiple people were taken into custody, but the suspected shooter fled on foot. Witnesses described the suspect as a Black man, wearing all-black clothing.
SkyEye flew over the scene, where, at some point, deputies were seen placing at least four people into custody. In an afternoon update, HCSO said they were still looking for a black four-door vehicle of interest.
"We do have several witnesses detained at the scene," Major Saul Suarez with HCSO said. "We do have leads based on those interviews."
Suarez said some of the people detained are from Cypress Lakes, but it's unclear if the incident was related to the school in the investigation's early stage.

The high school is said to be on a regular schedule until dismissal on Tuesday.
Authorities said the scene was secured, and students were able to be picked up by their parents.
Cy-Fair ISD said three schools, including Cypress Lakes High, McFee Elementary, and Emery Elementary, were in "secure the building mode," but that has since been lifted.
Deputies said it's unclear what exactly led to the shooting but added they were canvassing the area for surveillance footage.
Officials said there's already higher law enforcement visibility at the school as students are currently in finals week, so parents should expect to see the same throughout the rest of the school week.
