Cooling centers open in Fort Bend County due to Saturday's Heat Advisory

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Due to the Heat Advisory in effect Saturday for portions of southeast Texas, Fort Bend County Judge KP George announced emergency cooling centers will be provided for residents lacking air-conditioning at home.

The effect goes into effect at noon and is expected to last until 7 p.m. The heat index could hit 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

George said public facilities will open and service air-conditioning free of charge through Sunday.

"I advise Fort Bend County residents to prepare for the intense temperatures. I strongly encourage those who are at high risk, children, and the elderly to stay inside air-conditioned buildings during these high temperatures," said George.

The following locations will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents can help reduce electric use by setting their thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, turning off lights and pool pumps, avoid using large appliances like ovens, washing machines, and dryers, and turning off and unplug unnecessary electrical items that are not being used.
