Drive-by shooting leaves 15-year-old dead in northeast Houston neighborhood, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A family is grieving after a 15-year-old was shot and killed in a northeast Houston neighborhood.

Police said the teenager was shot when someone drove by and opened fire.



Houston police said officers were called at 6:21 p.m. to a shooting in the 2900 block of Brewster Street, which is two blocks from the Eastex Freeway in Greater Fifth Ward.

At the scene, officers found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the torso.

He was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he later died, police said.

Detectives were looking at video from nearby cameras and interviewing witnesses.

Investigators did not disclose descriptions of the suspect. Witnesses said they saw a dark-colored vehicle leaving the scene.

"There is video, and there are witnesses who saw it first hand. We're interviewing them and going through the information, as well as the video," a detective said at the scene. "Hopefully, we'll be able to come up with something very soon."

According to the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office, more than 30 kids under 18 years old have been shot and killed this year so far.
