CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- Montgomery County officials have reported their first case of Zika virus.

County Judge Craig Doyal announced Thursday afternoon that a pregnant woman living in Porter contracted the virus while traveling abroad.

Doyal did not specify where the woman contracted the virus.

"I am conferring with the appropriate public health and county officials on our mosquito abatement efforts to ensure Montgomery County is taking appropriate steps to aid in mosquito control," Doyal said in a news release.

Officials are advising residents to take the following steps to prevent Zika transmission:

  • Avoiding bites by using insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products and follow their directions for use.

  • Weather permitting, wear long sleeves, pants and socks when outdoors. Many mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn and it is good to consider staying indoors during this hours.

  • It is important to mosquito-proof your home. Empty any standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires, birdbaths and any other items holding water on a regular basis. Install or repair screen on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes outside and use your Air-conditioning if you have it.
