Take these steps for post-flood swimming pool cleanup

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Homes with backyard swimming pools can take on damage after a flood.

There are some steps to make sure the flood's effects don't become permanent:

• Do not drain your pool: Pool pop-up may occur.
• Clean out as much debris as possible.
• Clean skimmers, main drains, robot cleaner bags and pump baskets.
• Turn off all breakers at the pool equipment: After that, go to your home breaker box and reset your pool breakers that might have tripped.
• Call an electrician or pool service provider, in the event the breaker doesn't reset.
• If the breaker resets, go to your pool breaker box and slowly reset your equipment one by one.
• Check the pressure gauge on your filters: if it is close to or over 30 PSI, turn off your equipment and clean your filters.
• Use pool shock: Due to heavy possible contaminants, you may have to double the recommended dose. Do not swim in the pool for at least 48 hours after that.
• Run pool equipment 24 hours a day until water returns to its normal clear state. Continue to monitor the filter's pressure.
• Brush the pool two to three times every day to keep dirt stirred up. The dirt can make it into the pool filter.
• If there is no positive change to your pool, contact a local pool builder or service provider. Contacting them now will get you help as soon as possible since most companies take weeks to address your situation.
