2016 ends with super moon trio
The next super moons will appear on November 14 and December 14.

Moon gazers will be able to see two more super moons before the year ends as 2016 finishes with three occurrences of the lunar phenomenon.

"A super moon occurs because of the moon's elliptical orbit around our planet," said AccuWeather's Erik Austin. "On the perigee side, the moon is about 30,000 miles closer to earth than on the apogee side making it larger and brighter than normal."

The best time to view a super moon is when the moon is low on the horizon where "an illusion will occur that makes it look unnaturally larger," according to AccuWeather.

A super moon occurred on October 16, and will occur on November 14 and December 14.

And the super moon on Monday, November 14 may be spectacular! This month's is especially 'super' for two reasons: it is the only super moon this year to be completely full, and it is the closest moon to Earth since 1948 - when a gallon of gas cost just 16 cents. The moon won't be this super again until 2034!
