CHAPEL HILL, NC -- The University of North Carolina has issued an all-clear after a report of an armed man on or near the campus.

The all-clear notice was posted on the school's website Wednesday morning less than an hour after its alert about the possible armed man. The notice says the threat to campus is over and instructs students and others to resume normal activities.

Campus police spokesman Randy Young says the alert was issued around 8:45 a.m. when someone reported seeing an armed man near the school's Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps building.

Young says sirens were sounded to warn students and faculty to shelter in place.
