TxDOT wants to hear from you about historic I-45 project
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- You've probably heard about the major changes planned to the downtown freeway system.
Now you have the chance to weigh in. TxDOT is asking for your feedback on the project.
You have until June 27 to have your comments become part of the official record.
The plans would reroute I-45 to run parallel to US-59 on the east side of downtown, and remove the Pierce Elevated.
It would also remodel and widen I-45 all the way to the North Beltway.
Designers predict the new configuration will increase traffic speeds in downtown by 20 miles per hour during peak times.
The entire project cost is $7 billion, with construction is set to begin as early as 2020.
