An accident on the inbound lanes of Highway 290 at Eldridge forced crews to down the highway for hours Friday night and delay a scheduled closure for road work.

The accident happened just before 6:45pm.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the 18-wheeler crashed and ran into a concrete barrier. It spilled gravel all over the roadway so a HAZMAT crew was dispatched to clean it up.

That stretch of the highway already was set to close at 9pm because of scheduled construction from West Road to Jones Road. However, crews didn't clear the wreck in time, so to ease the traffic congestion, they delayed the scheduled highway closure by about an hour.
