HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A major ramp off the Gulf Freeway near downtown is shutting down for six months beginning Friday night.

Crews will block off the I-45 northbound connector ramp to US-59 northbound. TxDOT is moving the ramp farther south, lengthening the approach to the Eastex Freeway. The new ramp will not re-open until June 1, 2018.

It's part of a $30 million project that will remodel the entire I-45 / US-59 / SH-288 interchange.

Another goal is to move the left-side northbound exit from the Gulf Freeway to US-59 and SH-288, to make it a right exit.

The entire project is expected to be finished in the second quarter of 2019. During the ramp closure, drivers can take I-45 inbound to I-10 to US-59.
