AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Inmates across Texas donated tens of thousands of dollars from their commissary funds to help Hurricane Harvey victims get back on their feet.
State prisons put up a flier near the store in each facility, prompting 6,600 inmates to make cash donations.
The average donation was $8, but several inmates made donations in excess of $100. Altogether, inmates collected $53,863 that will now be donated to the Red Cross.
