Klein Teen's cancer battle inspires community to donate

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The moment 15-year-old Jacob Munoz rang the bell at Texas Children's to celebrate the end of his cancer treatment, was one his mother Yvette, wasn't sure would arrive when Jacob was diagnosed in 2015.

"All I did was pray to God not to take my son. It was a shock, because earlier that day he was playing basketball, and next thing I know we're in an ICU fighting for his life," said Yvette.

The two talked with us during our ABC13 Spring Blood Drive about the donations which helped save Jacob's life. His leukemia, at times, required constant transfusions. His mother created a Facebook page called 'Jacob's Fight' to chronicle the battle and ask for help.

"I cried out to the community on Facebook, I said please go and donate blood, so we can replenish the stock."

The family received overwhelming support, and Jacob said he has a long list of people to thank.

"My parents, God, the doctors, and the community," he said.

The Green family is equally grateful. Mother, Shannon explained that her daughter, Eden's bone cancer was so rare, it had never been seen before in the United States.

"She received blood almost weekly, and there were times when she got blood twice in a week," said Shannon.

Eden has been cleared by her doctors to dance and play as she used to do before her diagnosis. Eden hopes people keep continuing to give because the need is always there.

"Thank you for giving blood to kids like me and adults like me; so still donate please," said Eden.
