HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Due to the historic flooding across the Houston area, University of Houston has canceled or postponed all athletic events for the weekend.

UH football's season opener against UTSA in San Antonio has been postponed. Both universities will explore options for rescheduling the game for a later date, officials said in a release.

"Everyone in our university community, including our student-athletes, coaches and their staff, has been impacted by this incredible storm. This is a time for all of us to focus on the wellbeing of our families and neighbors and the recovery of the Houston area," said UH President Renu Khator in a statement. "We'll be excited to resume athletic competition, but right now our student-athletes are anxious to contribute to getting the city we love so much back on its feet again."

UH also announced the cross country team will no longer compete in the HBU Season Opener, the volleyball team will not travel for the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va., and the soccer team will stay in Houston instead of traveling to their matches at Mississippi State and LSU.
