HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Move over Mayweather and Pacquaio. This big fight is happening in Houston this weekend. Mexico's Canelo Alvarez takes on Texas Titan James Kirkland Saturday night at Minute Maid Park.
Many in the Hispanic community are especially excited for the fight.
Alvarez, Mexco's red-hot boxer of the moment will get back in the ring, here at Minute Maid Park.
"He's one of the last Mexican fighters who people are all behind," said fan Josh Rivera. "He's had some pretty big fights lately."
This time, the Mexican darling will fight James Kirkland. But it's the guy known for his slim and colored hair that has people buzzing.
At Minute Maid, the fans were ready, showing up in crowds for the official weigh-in. The excitement is just one of the reasons the fight was brought to Houston.
"Great market for boxing," said promoter Oscar de la Hoya. "Great fans. Passionate fans."
De la Hoya, who's promoting the bout, says bringing it to the Bayou City is a way to thank the fans who can't always travel to Las Vegas.
"Fans can't always shell out hundreds and thousands of dollars to go to Las Vegas and watch one of these super fights," said de la Hoya. "The fact that we're here, it really has been a great thrill and pleasure to be up close and personal with the fans."
More than 20,000 fans are expected. As of 5pm Friday, there were some tickets left starting at just $25.
