HOUSTON -- Thousands of people converged upon Houston National Cemetery near Greenspoint Saturday to honor fallen veterans with a Christmas flair.
Wreaths Across America Houston set out Christmas wreaths Saturday, Dec. 13 as part of a yearly event designed to celebrate veterans buried in the cemetery.
"This is our seventh year," said Scott deMasi, director for Wreaths Across America, Houston. "Before we got here there was another celebration, but no wreaths."
Wreaths Across America began more than 20 years ago when Worcester Wreath Company (a for-profit commercial business from Harrington, Maine) began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones in Arlington National Cemetery, according to the organization website. Since then, the company has donated wreaths that are placed by volunteers in a wreath-laying ceremony every December.
