New York philanthropist donates entire toy store to poor children
New York's Department of Homeless Services received thousands of toys and school supplies after a New York philanthropist had a generous idea.

NEW YORK (KTRK) -- A New York philanthropist will land on Santa's nice list this year after she bought out an entire toy store for kids in need.

Carol Suchman donates toys to the city's poorest children each year, but pulled double duty in generosity this year when she came upon a West Village toy and stationary store on the verge of closing its doors.

"When I saw this toy store, I just realized I could do it on a grander scale for this one year," Suchman said. "We talked and negotiated and bought the entire toy store."

Thousands of toys were bagged up and donated to New York's Department of Homeless Services ahead of the holidays.

Antonio Rodriquez says the gift stands out for obvious reasons.

"I've been doing this for many years and we have many generous sponsors," Rodriquez says. "But I have to say that this is the first time anybody ever bought out an entire store and donated to the children of shelters."

Suchman, who formerly owned a successful technology company with her husband, says children have been a focus of her charity for many years.

"I know everyone could use a gift around the holidays," she says.
