HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Yadira Banuelos tells how she went from not speaking English in elementary school to valedictorian of her high school. Banuelos grew up in a household that spoke Spanish exclusively.

But as she grew up, her grasp of English improved with the help of the Houston Independent School District's ELL (English language learners) program. Banuelos plans to study bilingual education at the University of Houston.
