After beaches were overly crowded upon reopening, officials are making efforts to control the crowds for Mother's Day weekend.

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- As people flocked to Galveston beaches this weekend, officials say they have had to rescue at least five people.

"There's quite a few people in and out of the waters, which are busy, rough and cool today," Peter Davis with Galveston's beach patrol said.

Davis added that more people are expected on Mother's Day since it'll much warmer and sunnier.

The sands of Galveston Island filled up with families on Friday as people made an escape from quarantines and stay home orders.

Last weekend, the beaches were crowded with islanders excited to get back in the sand after weeks of closures.

Galveston has the permission of the General Land Office to close vehicle entry points.

They say the efforts to control crowds will also free up first responders for emergencies.

The beaches will reopen to vehicles Sunday at 9 p.m.
