Random prom dates
High school keeps trandition alive with random prom date selections.

FREEPORT, IL (KTRK) -- In the age of the over-the-top 'promposals' one high school is keeping it old school with a tradition dating back to 1926.

The Illinois school actually matches up prom dates at random.

How it works is the junior and senior class boys draw the names of girls at random in the library. The girls are then waiting for them in the gym.

Once their date is selected, the boys head to the gym to perform a little skit before revealing who their date to the prom will be.

"I think most people are in disbelief and a lot of people say they would hate it. I've had a lot say 'Oh I would hate that'. But I think after they kind of hear the rest of the story and hear what goes into it I think a lot of people are actually intrigued by it. It's less of a date and more like something fun to do with your classmates," said Junior Class Adviser Michelle Gallagher.

The tradition started in 1926 to ensure all students had a date to the prom.

What do you think? Should more schools follow this tradition to keep students from getting left out?
