Plans for unique memorial
Plans are underway to build a unique memorial in The Woodlands to honor past, current, and future veterans

THE WOODLANDS, TX (KTRK) -- A one-of-a-kind veterans memorial is just months from breaking ground in The Woodlands.

After years of effort, "the way home project" is expecting a November groundbreaking at Town Green Park along The Woodlands waterway.

The memorial will honor all current, former, and future veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines of all military conflicts.

At its center is a planned bronze sculpture in which one soldier is showing another the way home to heaven.

Those soldiers bear the likenesses of two south Montgomery natives, Cory Kosters and Zachary Endsley. The two knew each other and died months apart in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007.

The fundraising effort has been slow but steady, raising more than half of the needed $400,000 to fund the installation.

Anadarko Petroleum made a large donation. The rest will come from the purchase of 2,000 small granite plaques which will surround the statue.
