New app helps temp workers
A new app is helping people in the Houston area find temporary work. Steve Campion reports.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A new app for your smartphone promises to change the way you look for temporary work. Shift Gig recently launched in the Bayou City. The developers told abc13 around 500 people and 40 businesses are using the application to fill open positions.

Davette McCall, 22, is one of those turning to her smartphone for a job. She joined Shift Gig late last year.

McCall said as a college student and athlete, she couldn't commit to a part-time job. She explained she's worked almost 30 gigs in the past few months ranging from cashier work to banquet serving. McCall said she's made anywhere from $11 to $14 an hour.

"It has tremendous amounts of flexibility. I couldn't always work certain days or weekends so when I was available, I would just go to the app, claim the shift, and work," said McCall. "It will pop up a list of shifts that are available. It states the pay, the hours, the location, and who the client is. Click claim shift and you're there to work."

Shift Gig co-founder Eddie Lou sat down with Eyewitness News. He explained the app is now online in nine cities. He said demand is big in Houston. Lou said those on the application can pick when and where they want to work.

"Everyone has a smartphone whether it's the millennials or the baby boomers, everyone uses their smartphone. It's a much simpler way," said Lou. "If a business wants a bartender versus a dishwasher, we will show the jobs that fit the specialist's background."
