Despite wet weather this weekend, law enforcement in Galveston County are still preparing for large crowds to take over the Crystal Beach area during Jeep Weekend.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- First responders are preparing for this year's Jeep Weekend on the Bolivar Peninsula after last year's event led to hundreds being arrested and at least six injuries.

The annual gathering of Jeep, ATV and big truck enthusiasts is expected to bring thousands of people to the Crystal Beach area this weekend, despite the possibility of wet weather. The gathering is not permitted or an organized event.

"Weather is weather. We can't assume that the people are not going to come because then we wouldn't be prepared," Commissioner Darrell Apffel said. "We have to prepare as if it is a beautiful sunny 90-degree weekend, and that's what we're doing."

Although the gathering is not permitted or an organized event, Apffel said he's still working to ensure the public's safety.

"When you don't have an organized event, it's hard to regulate or tell what you're going to have show up," creator of Bolivar tourism, David Harris, said. "The biggest thing is if people are coming down here, we love to see them. I mean, team Bolivar wants them down here. Just mind your Ps and Qs and act like you would in front of your grandparents.

After last year's event prompted over 600 police calls and one death, Galveston County deputies said it's increasing patrol, medical units and jail staff and state troopers this weekend.

More than Galveston County Sheriff deputies will be working overtime on Saturday, according to officials.

The sheriff's office is asking attendees to enjoy themselves, but urges everyone to continue practicing social distancing.
