Fundraiser held to assist community activist Johnny Mata in his battle with cancer

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A fundraiser was held Friday evening to assist community activist Johnny Mata in his battle with leukemia.

Friends say the longtime activist is $20,000 in the hold for treatments despite having insurance.

"Johnny spent many years fighting for others. Today, Johnny needs others to fight for him."
