WASHINGTON COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- Fun is returning to the town of Brenham in the form of the Washington County Fair after a rough few months following the shutdown of Blue Bell.

The Washington County Fair is the oldest county fair in the state of Texas, which officials are proud to say.

A fair queen candidate, Caitylyn Counsil spent her time getting her hands dirty at the county fair. She also brought 21 calves to the fair with her family.

It doesn't happen a lot when you see a queen candidate with a sash, in her boots, cleaning her animal.

"No ma'am, it doesn't happen too much," Counsil said.

In the unforgiving heat of the day, Counsil along with her friends got to skip school. But, that meant chores to prepare for the county fair.

"Oh yeah, it's a lot of work. I've been working all week," she said.

Counsil and Indigo Podeszwa have been showing animals for half of their lives.

"I've been showing since I was eight years old. So, you were a teeny, tiny when you started doing this. Yes ma'am," Podeszwa said.

The fair's crowned queen, Paige Fischer, is also a competing with livestock.

"I show pigs, washing them getting them ready for the show," Fischer said.

Fischer just might be taking care of business, despite her dress and accessories.

"Now this isn't just a sash here, we've got leather. Yes ma'am," she added.
