Houston's oldest rummage sale happening this weekend

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The oldest rummage sale in Houston is back for its 64th year, and we got a sneak peek at some of the items before the sale opens to the public.

The River Oaks Garden Club's Pink Elephant Sale starts Friday at the Bayou City Event Center and lasts two days.

From high fashion to housewares, there's something for everyone at the sale. If you're looking for a bargain, you might want to drop by and get in line! Admission is $1 and all sales are cash or check only.

"Everything is out. It is first come, first serve, and it can get a little crazy," said River Oaks Garden Club member Lori Britton.

Thousands of shoppers will make their way to the Pink Elephant Sale Friday and Saturday to browse the selection. Most of the items for sale are donated from the River Oaks Garden Club members. The club then uses the proceeds to fund their grants and community projects.

"We send the money back into the community via grants that are presented to us, and it's usually an environmental project," Britton said.

Bargain bloggers Pippa Williams and Jen Meneely are helping spread the word about the sale via their blog TooCheapBlondes.com.

The ladies previewed some of the boutique items and pulled out just some of the treasures that will be for sale. They found high-end labels to the likes of Valentino, Chanel, and Jimmy Choo for bargain basement prices!

One of the most fabulous finds - a vintage Chanel evening gown worn by a Bond girl to the James Bond movie premiere for just $62!

Never worn Jimmy Choo sandals were marked for $39, and we found a Valentino dress for $40! A Trina Turk dress was priced at $16, and a Tory Burch dress is going for $8!

"The list goes on and on, amazing deals," said Meneely.

These are just a small sampling of the thousands of items that will occupy the 22,000 square foot center this weekend.

If designer duds aren't your thing, there are plenty of other everyday labels, with prices starting at just $2.

"There will be entire tables with everything is $2, with nothing over $2 then $4, then $8, and on up," Meneely said.

Everything is tagged and items not in the boutique section are color-coded to make checkout a breeze. A pink tag means $4, it's $8 for purple, and a green tag will cost $16.

Since a garden club is hosting the sale, there will be plants for sale. The club grows the plants all year long in their greenhouse, then sale them for $1-$10.
