Cut Your Bills: Save on groceries
How to save on your groceries

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's one of the biggest bills in the household - groceries.

Shoppers use different strategies to save you money, so we went to straight to the source to get their best tips.

"I just always look for the marked down items," Martha Pineda said.

Those marked down manager specials at most grocery stores can be found in the produce, bakery and meat departments.

"I buy reduced meat and stick it in the freezer," Kristin Edwards said.

Another tip? Shop more often.

"I come everyday. Save $100 a week doing that," Chuck Clark said.

"I used to work full time and would buy 10 days worth of food and throw away the last three days. So now I shop more, and I get a better deal," Emily Friend said.

Shoppers suggest to buy store brand items.

"Kroger has an organic chicken broth called Imagine," Bob Dudley said.

Another money-saving strategy that they told us about is double-dipping. Go to the manager's special section where the deals are already reduced. Then use an app, like the one Kroger has, to get an even better deal.

Lastly, never come to the store hungry.

"Instead of buying a whole bunch of random stuff, just buy something you can eat while you're walking around," Nick Laili said.
