Family raising money for nurse injured in mercy killings in northwest Harris County

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We have an update on a horrible situation Wednesday, where an elderly man shot and killed his disabled wife then himself -- all because they didn't want to be a burden.

Linda and John Howell were both battling major health problems, so authorities said John took it upon himself to put an end to their suffering. John fatally shot Linda and then himself. But the bullet that killed him also struck his son in the arm and a nurse who was caring for them in the head. The nurse was taken by LifeFlight to a hospital, and she is said to be in good condition.

But now the Howells' daughter is setting up a GoFundMe page for the nurse who was caught in the middle. She was hit in the head by a bullet fragment and remains in the hospital.

The family says she's a mother of five and has been working two jobs to make ends meet.
