2 shark bites reported in Florida -- within 30 minutes of each other

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL (KTRK) -- Two people were bitten by sharks Sunday off New Smyrna Beach, FL, authorities say. The bites were reported within 30 minutes of each other.

The first bite happened around 11am while 15-year-old boy was surfing. Authorities say the shark bit his right foot about 100 yards from shore. The boy made it back to the beach on his own.

At 11:30am, about a mile south of where the first bite was reported, a 29-year-old man was also bitten on the foot -- his left -- also while surfing.

Both victims suffered deep cuts.

Authorities say water conditions, including more bait fish, poor visibility, and a murky, rough surf may have contributed to the incidents. Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Aaron Jenkins says sharks might mistake a foot for bait fish.

These are shark bites 10 and 11 in Volusia for the county this year.

The area's beaches are open.
