Seaweed takes over the beaches of Galveston
The seaweed helps protect the beaches from erosion, but it's not the nicest view for visitors

GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- With just hours left before the start of Memorial Day weekend, crews worked overtime on Galveston Island to push back all the seaweed.

The naturally occurring event blanketed parts of the beach. In some spots, you couldn't even see the sand.

Officials with Galveston Island's Convention and Visitors Bureau said the seaweed actually helps to protect from erosion. We witnessed crews collecting the seaweed and stacking it on the dunes. It's left to decompose and allow for more vegetation to grow in its place.

Those visiting the island said they're navigating around the seaweed. While it's not pleasant to smell, they wanted an escape for the weekend. Most smiled, saying they'll still have fun with or without it on the sand.
