Fred Boucher recently found a ball of bees in his backyard. While most people would immediately avoid the stinging creatures, Boucher went against all rational instinct and instead picked up the swarming ball in his bare hands and proceeded to record the phenomenon.

And it's completely captivating.

Boucher narrates this compelling video of a swarm of bees literally burning their queen alive through massive moving friction. Once the queen bee is near old age, she stops producing her distinct pheromone, or scent, indicating that she is in fact her nest's leader. Without it, the bees recognize her as an intruder, and kill her without second thought.
