HOUSTON -- Holy Week celebrations are happening across the Houston area, and one such service took place in the unique setting of the Open Door Mission on Houston's East End. Staff, volunteers and participants in the substance recovery and rehabilitation program took turns washing one another's feet as Christians believe Jesus did before the Last Supper.

"Because of the kind of therapeutic community they're in, they see the way change comes about is through humility," said Reverend Walter Pope of Greater Macedonia Baptist Church. He is also a former participant in the Open Door Mission program.

For current participant, Carlos Hernandez, the act of washing another's feet brought home a much-needed lesson about service to others.

"I think it was amazing. I think I really needed to do this where I am in my life to help others and help myself mentally, physically and spiritually."

Holy Week concludes with Easter on Sunday.
