HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman who was robbed as she was leaving her southwest Houston home to go have a baby has announced the birth of her son.

Ebony Sowells says she gave birth to Malcolm Xavier on Wednesday. The baby boy is a healthy 7 lbs 2 oz.

The mother of three was supposed to give birth a day earlier, but as she was leaving her home around 4am to go be induced, four robbers sprung into action. The masked men told Sowells and her family to get out of their car, go back inside the home and then held them at gunpoint as the robbers went through their belongings.

She says the crooks didn't take anything inside, but they stole the family's rented car.

"All the baby stuff was in the car. We were on our way to the hospital," she said. "I was like, OK, we can't bring the baby home without a car seat."

The robbers made off with several gift cards meant for the baby given to her by family and friends at the baby shower. Other items for the baby, like money orders, birth certificate and identification, were also taken.

"I lost everything I needed for the baby, but I could have lost my life," Sowells said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account in hopes that someone can help them replace what the robbers took so baby Malcolm will have what he needs when he gets home from the hospital.
