Postal service ramps up service for holidays

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's full steam ahead for the U.S. Postal Service and the holiday shipping season. Starting this week, USPS will begin delivering packages seven days week as it predicts nearly 600-million packages will be shipped out over the next few weeks. And if you are planning to be one of the senders -- here are some important dates to keep in mind.

First, If you want to spend the least amount on shipping, Tuesday December 15th is your 'D-Day' or deadline day to mail packages at the standard post rate.

Next, sending holiday cards to loved ones? Mark Saturday December 19th on your calendar that's deadline for any standard envelope or small package you need to mail out.

Now, if you're prone to waiting until the last minute to ship off packages. Monday December 21st is the date you want to remember that's for priority mail. It will cost you more but your gifts will get to their destination before Christmas.

And finally, if you're really biting the bullet, there's priority mail express. The deadline is December 23rd and it's the most expensive option but it's an overnight guarantee -- that means Christmas Eve delivery.
