The freshman Republican congressman is getting barraged with criticism about his 'alternate universe' that would leave federal workers with paychecks.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Freshman Texas Republican congressman, Dan Crenshaw, is getting barraged with criticism over a tweet about the shutdown.

On Friday, Crenshaw tweeted, "In an alternate universe where Republicans still held the House, the government would be open, federal workers would have their paychecks, and border patrol would have the funding and tools they need. Just something to think about."

Republicans did control both chambers of Congress and the White House when the shutdown began.

There are more than 15,000 comments, retweets and likes for Crenshaw's tweet.

Crenshaw announced Friday he asked for his own paycheck to be withheld "until we have come to an agreement to adequately fund border security."
