Officials react after Trump clinches presidency

WASHINGTON (KTRK) -- The election of Donald Trump as 45th president of the United States was seen by Republican officials early Wednesday as a victory for American workers.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, one of Trump's former rivals for the 2016 GOP nomination, categorized the election as a rejection of President Barack Obama's "agenda of bigger government, intrusive regulation, executive overreach, and lawlessness."

Cruz also signaled Trump's need to get to work.

"This election astonished the pundits. This was a change election," Cruz said. "Americans voted for Republicans because of a promise to go to Washington to reverse our current course, and end the Washington cartel -- a promise to drain the swamp. Now is the time to follow through on those words with action."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott mirrored Cruz's sentiments, saying he looked forward to working with Trump to advance conservative principles.

"One thing from this election is abundantly clear - millions of Americans feel they have been ignored by a political class in Washington, D.C. that prioritizes protecting an elite establishment before We the People," Abbott said.

Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick said Trump's election would mean "Texans will now have a good friend in the White House who will be our partner in securing the border."

Not everyone was so congratulatory, however.

The nation's first Latina senator and the first woman ever elected senator in Nevada, Catherine Cortez Mssto, said Trump could expect to keep him within his constitutional powers.

Noticeably silent is the White House this morning, who has yet to issue a statement. But, Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway tells ABC News that President Obama called Donald Trump after his victory.

"They will meet soon," Conway says.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, was quick to send its congratulations to Trump.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to the president-elect congratulating him on winning, and said he hopes to work jointly with him to overcome the "crisis in Russia-U.S. relations."
