Last dog left after 'empty the shelters' event gets adopted

PETOSKEY, Michigan -- The final dog at an animal shelter in northern Michigan has been adopted.

Twenty-one cats and dogs were adopted at the shelter Saturday as part of a state-wide "Empty the Shelters" campaign.

Everyone got adopted but Eastwood, a 1-year-old red lab who was born with a deformed back leg.

But after his plight was shared on Facebook, more than 80 applications came in for him.

He was officially adopted Tuesday and will be moving in with his metro Detroit family next week. The shelter told WXMI they're hoping Eastwood will inspire more adoptions.

"While he's an amazing and wonderful dog, there's still so many animals that need homes across the country," said Jessica Evans, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society. "I'm hoping for this to give people the opportunity to consider other animals that need homes just as much as Eastwood."

The Bissell Pet Foundation said more than 2,500 animals were adopted across 65 Michigan shelters and rescues over the weekend.
