MISSOURI CITY, TX (KTRK) -- A violent train crash in Missouri City leaves a woman dead and sends a man to a hospital. Right now, investigators are determining what exactly happened.

Authorities say the man drove around the crossing arms near Highway 90 and Cravens after seeing one train stopped on the tracks.

Investigators say the man driving the car decided to go around the crossing arms. That is when a train came from the other direction and struck the vehicle. The lights were working.

Authorities say that it appears the entire tragedy could have been avoided.

"The crossing arms were down. The lights were flashing. The train had its horn going and they elected to go around arms," said Captain Paul Poulton with the Missouri City Police Department.

The woman's husband is believed to be the one who was injured. He was transported to the Memorial Hermann Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Authorities believe the couple lives near the accident scene.
