Witness describes moments before officer-involved shooting
Gunfire rang out at the home in NW Harris County and when it was over, one person was dead

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The 911 caller, who dialed for help before a deadly deputy-involved shooting last night, spoke out to Eyewitness News this morning.

Elizabeth Romero lives on Pebble Trace Drive near T.C. Jester in northwest Harris County. Romero recalled the frantic moments just before 5pm Monday evening. Romero said she spotted her next door neighbor acting strange as she was walking her dogs in the back yard.

Romero said the man was standing on a chair, looking over the fence as if someone was out to get him. She went inside, looked out her window to see him still over the fence and called 911.

"I was so nervous," said Romero. "I watch in my window. I saw he was hiding ... so I called the police."

Before Harris County deputies arrived at the home, Romero said an ambulance already pulled up next door. Someone else had called 911.

Romero said a woman at the man's house was severely injured. Deputies said the woman was in critical condition, bleeding from her head.

"I was very scared. I heard there was shooting ... like 10," said Romero. She then dropped to the floor. "Yeah, I didn't know what to do. I went up and hid myself."

What happened next has left neighbors on edge. Deputies insisted the man engaged them in a shootout, pulled out a weapon, and took aim at law enforcement. They returned fire and killed him.

Paramedics rushed the injured woman to the hospital in critical condition. The name of the man killed and the deputy who fired his weapon have not been released.

Romero said the injured woman is a relative of the accused shooter. She learned from law enforcement they were in some type of dispute about whether he could stay at the home. She said the argument happened just before the woman was injured, and before the man went out into the backyard.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office hasn't released any more details since their initial briefing Monday evening. Requests from Eyewitness News about how the injured woman and man may be connected have gone unanswered.
