Trail ride accident
One person was injured in the trail riding accident along Bellaire and South Rice Friday.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A trail rider was injured on the way to Memorial Park Friday. It was a near disaster, when an animal was spooked and started a terrible chain reaction.

The Las Vaqueros trail riders were making their way up south Rice Boulevard in Bellaire as people gathered to watch with a police escort in front of the covered wagons.

And then it happened. One of the mules pulling a wagon was spooked. The mules veered. A horse and rider next to the wagon was hit and went to the ground, where they appeared to be run over by the wagon.

The horse got up with an injured leg. The first-time trail rider was hospitalized with at least one broken bone, we're told.

It all happened in front of a school yard full of kids.

"As they were leaving, a construction barrel blew over and spooked the horses in the wagon and the wagon went out of control," said Sgt. Daniel Kerr with the Bellaire Police Department.
