Union says HPD officers were wearing vests

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Officers shot during Tuesday's shooting were wearing protective vests, according to Houston Police Officers Union President Ray Hunt.

Hunt said the officers were wearing standard vests but that the bullets struck them below the vests. Vests only cover vital organs.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo has not yet clarified whether or not the officers were wearing vests.

After five Dallas police officers were shot and killed in July 2016, the HPOU launched a campaign to raise money for rifle-proof vests for every officer.

Now, HPD has 600 rifle-proof vests officers can check out when their shift begins, according to Hunt.

The union is still collecting donations for more rifle-proof vests. Those interested can donate here: houstonpolicefoundation.org
