Suspect shot and killed in shootout with Hedwig Village officer

Suspect killed in late night shootout
It started with a chase and ended with gunfire and a suspect dead

HEDWIG VILLAGE, TX (KTRK) -- A suspect who got into a gunfight with police on the west side of town last night is dead.

Police say it started at around 11:30pm as an officer tried to pull over two people in vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver refused and a chase started.

One passenger bailed out earlier in chase in 9000 block of Gaylord. Police say The driver ended up hitting a curb at 800 South Voss in Hunter's Creek.

The driver them reportedly jumped out and reached around his waistband, pulled out a gun and fired four of five times, hitting the officer's cruiser. The officer returned fire and hit the suspect several times.

Medics took the suspect to Ben Taub Hospital, where he died. The passenger in the vehicle has not been located.

An internal investigation of the shooting is underway. The officer, who has been with the department for three years, was not hurt.
