WEST UNIVERSITY, TX (KTRK) -- A high ranking Mexican official is recovering after a bizarre attack in West University Place Monday morning.

According to witnesses, the attack happened at her home on Browning Street.

Workers identified the woman injured as Claudia Velasco. She is currently listed at the first secretary for the Mexican Consulate in Houston. Only abc13 crews were on the scene to capture police at the residence as they investigated the crime, assisted by federal authorities with the Secret Service.

Officers said a man armed with a garden saw jumped the back fence and attacked the woman near the rear of the home. He then tried to rob her. 911 was called, and West University Place officers took Arnold Martin into custody.

Those on scene told Eyewitness News that Velasco is recovering in the hospital with cuts to her hand and neck.

Martin, 50, told investigators he took a bus to West University in order to steal money for drugs.
