A high school student says her teacher insulted her and she has a recording to prove it

GREENSBORO, GA (KTRK) -- A Georgia high school student says her teacher insulted her in front of the entire class, calling her "dumb."

Shaniaya Hunter has an eye condition that forces her to miss school from time-to-time. She says she was trying to catch up ahead of a test in December when the teacher made the comments. Shaniaya was recording the lesson on her school-issued iPad.

In the recording, a voice can be heard saying, "I have been around 37 years, and clearly, you are the dumbest girl I have ever met. ... You know what your purpose is going to be? To have sex and have children you ain't never gonna be smart."

In an interview with local station WSB, Shaniaya, a junior at Green County High School, said, "I don't think it's OK. I don't think he should be here."

At one point in the interview, she was brought to tears.

Shaniaya was surrounded by her mom and her aunt when WSB interviewed her at her attorney's officer in Greensboro.

Ben windham took on the case pro bono after Shaniaya's mom approached the school district and was unsatisfied with the response.

Windham said, ""The man does not need to be teaching young children. It's not a gray area. End of story."

WSB asked Greene County Schools if it took action to discipline the teacher. The response, in part: federal and state law place substantial limits on what a school district can publicly say."

Hunter told WSB the worst part was when the teacher drew attention to her vision problems.

Shaniaya says she's not the only one the educator criticizes. She says she's just the only one coming forward and she does not want to have to face him again.

Cathy Wright, Shaniaya's mom, said, "We're gonna fight. We're gonna keep fighting until it's over. It's not over yet."
