HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Deputy Darren Goforth's accused killer Shannon Miles has been transferred to a state mental facility, Eyewitness News has learned.

Miles was transported to North Texas State Hospital in Vernon. The hospital is the only place in Texas where violent accused criminals get treatment designed to restore their competency to stand trial. His treatment will take at least three months and could go longer if found incompetent, again.

ABC13's Ted Oberg visited the facility in May. At North Texas Hospital, visitors are encouraged to look at name badges to determine who is a patient and who is a staff member. There are no handcuffs, no shackles, dormitory doors are locked only at shift changes; guards are out of sight.

Miles is accused of killing Deputy Goforth in execution-style on August 28.
