The deputy was talking to a customer outside the store a person wearing a mask came from behind the store and opened fire, striking the deputy several times.

MONCKS CORNER, SC (KTRK) -- A South Carolina sheriff's deputy is in the hospital after he was shot by a masked man, ABC affiliate WCIV-TV reports.

It happened around 3:00am this morning at an Exxon gas station in Moncks Corner, which is located just outside of Charleston.

Investigators say Lieutenant Will Rogers was talking to a customer outside the store a person wearing a mask came from behind the store and opened fire. Rogers was struck several times.

Detectives say the suspect then car-jacked a Black Santa Fe SUV and took off. The vehicle was recovered nearby at a boat landing, but the search for the masked gunman continues.

Lieutenant Rogers was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina for emergency surgery. He's been a member of the law enforcement community for 25 years. There is no word on his current condition.
