Red stag deer runs loose outside Waltrip High School in NW Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There was an unusual sight at Waltrip High School Sunday afternoon.

The school was closed, but no one told that to a 400 pound exotic deer. Neighbors noticed a red stag deer wandering outside the campus.

The game warden says animal control had to shoot the deer with two tranquilizers to subdue it. The deer will go to an exotic animal facility in Hockley.

The deer is not native to this area, and authorities are trying to track down the owner.
