Police: Family Dollar axe burglar couldn't hack it in northeast Houston

Man uses axe in break-in
A man used an axe to break into a dollar store in northeast Houston, according to police.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man was arrested after using an axe to break into a Family Dollar store early this morning in northeast Houston.

Police say the used a ladder to climb onto the store's roof and then hacked his way into the building. The man tripped off the alarm in the process. Police were called around 3:30am to the store on Mesa near Green River.

After he made his way into the roof of the store, police say he loaded merchandise into trash bags.

However, to his surprise, officers were waiting for him when he came out.

Police say he paced the roof for a while and then decided to jump in an attempt to escape.

The drop is about 10 feet, but the man wasn't hurt. He literally hit the ground running.

He was caught a short time later.
