Plane crashes into Massachusetts home, kills all three aboard

A small plane crashed into a house Sunday evening, killing three people on board, police said, but residents managed to flee from the home (KTRK)

A plane crashed into a Plainville, Massachusetts house Sunday night, causing a large fire that engulfed the home and causing the deaths of all three people on the plane.

According to ABC affiliate WCVB, The plane went down Sunday night causing a large fire that engulfed the Plainville home. Massachusetts State Police said the family was home at the time and all four managed to get out alive.

Radio transmissions indicate the pilot reported an engine problem about five minutes before the crash. The pilot told air traffic controllers that he was "unable to maintain altitude" and needed help.

"We've got a real bad vibration. We're losing engines," he told the flight controllers. "We have no engines."

The pilot was not able to make it to North Central State Airport in Rhode Island, about 7 miles away, or to Interstate 495, where controllers had suggested a highway landing. The plane wound up behind a two-story colonial home, where a section of the tail and a charred wing rested on a hillside in the yard.

The home's residents managed to escape after the crash. Preliminary reports show three people in the plane were killed.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
