HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman was carjacked near the medical center on her way home from work.
It happened around 4am Wednesday near the 3100 block of MacGregor. According to University of Texas Police, two men held a woman at gunpoint and forced her out of her car. The men stole the car, and the woman was not hurt.'
"They have all the control in that situation, and whatever their demands are, it's best to follow them," Police Inspector Stefan Happ said, "because if you do something unexpected, they may end up hurting you."
Houston police recovered the stolen car, but the two men are still on the loose.
Happ said drivers can sometimes keep themselves from becoming a target by being aware and not looking down at their cell phones.
"Carjackers look for, like any criminal, a victim, who can be targeted quickly who can be surprised," Happ said. "And if they don't think they can surprise you because you're looking around, making eye contact, there's a good chance they'll wait for someone else to come by."
Happ said if you find yourself in a similar situation, it is probably not a good idea to reach for your purse before getting out of the car.
"You don' know what kind of mindset the individual has," Happ said. "You don't know if they're on drugs or alcohol, if they are desperate, how confident they are, so movement towards a purse could trigger the individual to take some sort of action that you don't want taken."
Happ said the best thing you can do to survive a carjacking is to comply with the criminal's demands.
